Computing for the CMS Experiment
The Institute of Experimental Particle Physics (ETP) has many years of experience in the field of grid computing. The institute cooperates closely with the KIT computing center (Steinbuch Centre for Computing, SCC). SCC operates the central German computing center for particle physics, the Tier-1 center GridKa, and provides resources for the final data analysis steps for the German user community (Tier-3 center).
ETP is responsible for the CMS-specific user support at GridKa and coordination of Tier-1 operation with CMS. ETP scientists have been instrumental in developing tools for grid resource monitoring and services (meta monitoring tool HappyFace), for data and workflow management (PhEDEx and Glidein) as well as job management (grid-control) and resource virtualization (ViBatch).
